The “grouppe”

Our group of fifteen (15) is comprised of a diverse range of people, most from Australia and three (3) from America. The tour organisers is All Trails from Melbourne, Susan and Phil, though the actual tour is run by Experience Plus based in Italy and the US. We have three (3) tour guides, Lisa, Enrico and Daniele.

It is fair to say that the group for the most part is similar to me.

Most of the group are on hire bicycles, and a few have brought their own bicycles. More about that later.

I’ve been riding with the faster group, and can maintain pace other than on the steep climbs. In short, it’s all good.

What is noticeable is that not everyone is used to the discipline of group riding, which is calling, and keeping an organised and tight formation. I find that a bit disconcerting sometimes. The traffic is tolerant and patient with cyclists, however there’s been a number of close calls with traffic and while it’s easy to blame the vehicle, I believe it’s not always the motorists fault. At least now we have a safety talk every evening, and I’ve raised the safety issues a few times.  There’s minimal opportunity to ride two abreast here, the roads are far too narrow.
